As cost-of-living pressure, rental availability, and housing affordability continued to dominate news headlines, the national leadership score remained at 63/100 in April - June 2023.

  • Overall, competence (67/100), integrity (63/100), and contribution (65/100) scores remained unchanged, with plenty of room for improvement across sectors and institutions.
  • The public sector remained the best performer overall but declined from 74 to 71. The not-for-profit sector improved marginally from 64 to 65. While the government sector continued to perform worst at 58, and the private sector stagnated at 62.
  • Specifically, perceptions of leadership declined for both emergency services (82 to 79) and public health (71 to 68). Improvement was observed in retail (66 to 69) and religious institutions (53 to 62). Notably, ratings of state government leadership continued to decline, steadily decreasing from 63 in Dec 2021, to 54 in Jun 2023.
